Wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) is a group of distributed specialized sensors to monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, vibration intensity etc., and implement the control based on the results of sensing. Sensors cooperatively pass their data through the network to a main location.
Modular Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (mWSAN) node with required functionality is assembled out of Plug&Play hardware module boards containing various power supply units, wired/wireless transceivers, sensors, actuators, peripheral devices (e.g. external memory, security accelerators).
Once started, the modular node identifies attached modules and connects to the central server via the available communication technologies joining a heterogeneous wireless networks. The resulting network includes the nodes transferring their data over the different wireless communication technologies and may opportunistically bridge the technologies at the multi-radio nodes. The drivers and applications for the modular nodes may be hardcoded for each node or dynamically obtained from network. The operation of a node is automatically optimized based on the available modules, resources and current needs of the network and applications.
Traditionally sensor networks rely on point solution, which is specific for the application. Our mWSAN structure is more generic and aims for multipurpose solutions, which is one of the corner stone of IoT. This makes our platform perfect solution for research and development of the related topics.

The WNL mWSAN platform has been used in multiple research activities of CWC. To list a few:
Practical studies of the performance of IEEE 802.15.4a based UWB radio solutions.
The platform has been used to implement the UWB based and ZigBee Round-Trip Time of Flight (RTT) based wireless indoor localization solutions.
The earlier version of the platform has been integrated with a quadcopter and a camera and was demonstrated as part of environment video surveillance.
The WNL WSN platform has been demonstrated at major international scientific conferences, such as: IPSN 2015, EuCNC 2015 and MobiCom 2015.
Running. Development continues.
Development of mWSAN system has been funded by WNL project, which includes also Linux enriched Wireless open Access Research Platform (Le-WARP) environment. WNL project contains research of both environments, but future research project mWSAN and Le-WARP environments can be exploited together or separately. Terms and conditions
The environment can be provided to the partner organizations in joint research & development projects. The environment can be made available for research/industrial partners based on a specific agreement. Terms and conditions will be determined on a case by case basis.
